About Company
Collabora is a software consultancy that helps businesses, nonprofits, and governments work smoothly with open source software. They bring deep technical know-how in areas like graphics, multimedia, web engines, and embedded systems. If you've ever used an open source project behind the scenes of a smart TV, car dashboard, or mobile device, there's a good chance Collabora's team had something to do with it.
Role Overview
This is a paid, full-time internship starting in September 2026 for about six months. You'll work on real open source software projects that have actual users – no fake tasks or busy work. The role is ideal for someone who is passionate about open source but doesn't yet have years of experience. You don't even need to be a student or recent graduate. As long as you're motivated and have some basic C and git skills, you're welcome to apply.
Responsibilities
• Work full-time (40 hours per week) on an open source software project alongside real users
• Get hands-on with infrastructure-level code – think kernel, embedded systems, graphics, or multimedia
• Collaborate with one or more experienced F/LOSS developers who will mentor you directly
• Write clean C code and contribute to existing open source communities
• Use git for version control and follow project contribution guidelines
• Participate in team discussions and code reviews as part of a remote-first development team
• Document your changes and help improve project documentation where needed
Qualifications & Skills
• Fluency in written and spoken English – you'll be communicating with a global team
• Solid basic skills in C programming (you don't need to be an expert, but you should be comfortable)
• Working knowledge of git – cloning, branching, committing, pushing
• Some familiarity with Rust (even basic exposure is fine)
• A genuine interest in open source software and how things work under the hood
Must-haves
• Demonstrable interest in at least one of these areas: kernel, embedded, multimedia, graphics, XR, integration, packaging, web engines, system services, or toolkits
• Ability to work independently in a remote setup – you'll be anywhere, not tied to an office
• Willingness to learn by doing and ask questions when stuck
• No requirement to be a student or recent graduate – anyone passionate about open source can apply
Nice-to-have
• Existing contributions to any open source software project (code, documentation, testing, or community participation)
• Familiarity with Collabora's work – checking out their blog is a great start
• Experience working on infrastructure-level code rather than just desktop or mobile apps
• Understanding of how open source communities communicate (mailing lists, IRC, Discord, merge requests)
Perks & Benefits
• You get paid to work on open source – no unpaid internships here
• Mentorship from some of the best F/LOSS developers in the world
• Fully remote – work from anywhere, even if you live near their Cambridge or Montreal offices
• Real impact – your code will be used by actual people and projects
• Flexible start date in September 2026 with a typical six-month duration
• Continuous review of applications – early applicants get better chances
